Bible Study Tool

Hi,

I have got Trisquel 11 installed.

Does Trisquel have a Bible Study Tool?

It is impossible to install Xiphos, even though it is mentioned in Synaptic.

There are also SWORD modules, which you can install,
but I coudn't find the programme itself.

So, how can you open the Sword modules if installed?
How can I install Xiphos?

When trying to install Xiphos, it showed up briefly 2 missing dependencies, later they were not shown up again, so I couldn't find them anymore.

Thanks

Gottfried

Thank you for your question Gottfried!

I'm also interested in finding answers, as I tried to use the Pure Bible Search (KJPBS), but couldn't access the self-contained version I installed on a usb stick.

At the time I was even less able to sort problems like this, so I postponed it and planned to try again later. The KJPBS is a great bible search tool and also comes with the original 1828 Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language. Your question reminded me and sparkled another try, thank you again.

The version I use is BibleTime 3.0. I'm sure it's also based on the Sword module and can access the same libraries.

Hi,

thanks Magic Banana and Geshmy for anwwering my question.

1.
Would it be a good idea to fix the problem with Xiphos in Trisquel
So that anybody could use it straight away?

2.
"There is this PPA for Xiphos: https://launchpad.net/~pkgcrosswire/+archive/ubuntu/ppa?field.series_filter=jammy

It is in FlatHub too: https://flathub.org/apps/org.xiphos.Xiphos"

Which one is better?
Is FlatHub connected with Ubuntu? Then I would not like to use it.

If PPA is a better possibility, then how can I install it?
Do I have to add
https://launchpad.net/~pkgcrosswire/+archive/ubuntu/ppa?field.series_filter=jammy
to my source list first?
After that to download it?

3.
3.possibility
How can I install BibleTime? if it is not mentioned in Trisquel?
I didn't find it in Synaptic.

thanks
Gottfried

Which one is better?

If you do not use Flatpak yet, the advantage of using the PPA is that it integrates with your regular updates.

Is FlatHub connected with Ubuntu?

Not at all. Canonical actually pushes an alternative store, the Snap Store, with a different packaging format.

If PPA is a better possibility, then how can I install it?

In a terminal (not that it cannot be done graphically, but it is harder to explain):
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pkgcrosswire/ppa
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install xiphos

As for the Flatpak in the "floss" subset of FlatHub:
$ sudo apt install flatpak
$ flatpak remote-add --subset=floss flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
$ flatpak install flathub org.xiphos.Xiphos

To update your Flatpaks:
$ flatpak update

How can I install BibleTime?

There is a Flatpak too:
$ flatpak install flathub info.bibletime.BibleTime

Hi,
thanks very much Magic Banana.

1.
I tried to install Xiphos via ppa.

The same problem, which occurred many years ago is still there:

Die folgenden Pakete haben unerfüllte Abhängigkeiten:
xiphos : Hängt ab von: libbiblesync1.1 (> 1.1.2-0) ist aber nicht installierbar
E: Probleme können nicht korrigiert werden, Sie haben zurückgehaltene defekte Pakete.

The following packages have unfulfilled dependencies:
xiphos : Depends on: libbiblesync1.1 (> 1.1.2-0) but is not installable
E: Problems cannot be corrected, you have retained broken packages.

_Can this be solved in Trisquel?_

2.
I tried to install with flatpak

If I were you I would just use BibleTime. The others can be a bit more difficult in my experience. BibleTime is good, straightforward, useful, simple to configure. They all give you access to the same basic resources via various online book repositories.

Can this be solved in Trisquel?

I do not know the reason for libbiblesync1.1 being out of Trisquel, whereas it is in Ubuntu: https://packages.ubuntu.com/libbiblesync1.1

Maybe doubts related to whether https://raw.githubusercontent.com/karlkleinpaste/biblesync/refs/heads/master/COPYING actually grants the four freedoms. It is a custom license (what is essentially always a bad idea).

Info: org.gnome.Platform//46 is end-of-life, with reason:
The GNOME 46 runtime is no longer supported as of April 17, 2025. Please ask your application developer to migrate to a supported platform.

The Flatpak is not much maintained, apparently. "The Xiphos Developer Team" maintains it according to https://flathub.org/apps/org.xiphos.Xiphos but that information is "unverified" and, in fact, the actual developers refused to maintain a Flatpak: https://github.com/crosswire/xiphos/issues/823

If it is good enough for you, just using BibleTime, as andyprough suggested, may be better.

Indeed there is an exception to biblesync.

Maybe something has changed since the time it was placed, so that's the reason is not available, this requires further investigation.

Hi,

sorry I forgot to ask

Info: org.gnome.Platform//46 is end-of-life, with reason:
The GNOME 46 runtime is no longer supported as of April 17, 2025. Please ask your application developer to migrate to a supported platform.

What does that mean?

Who is the application developer?
Does this refer to the Xiphos package?

thanks
Gottfried
