Last night's local news featured some local businesses that have for some non existent random reason, or maybe for some hidden nefarious reason been excluded from Google search results. It is reported that this is happening to small businesses all over the US. Of course, my hackles were raises at the mention of Google, but this is just too much!
So, to links for Startpage and Searx Instances on my homepage, I have added
AOL Search
Brave Search
Duckduckgo
Gibiru
Qwant
Swisscows
I value privacy but I also do not want censorship happening to my searches. Any thoughts?
Yes, absolutely, imagine how many people have been using bing/google/baidu for so long, people are aware that the search results are altered, and now, these major providers even have a.i. systems that attempt to engage "the audience" the users, and tell them for example, the definitions of major pivotal events in history, or the definitions of technological systems, organizations, in other words defining the truth, and pressuring people to limit their potentially more significant ideas.
It's such a huge subject matter, we could sit here right now, and start writing a book all about it, with hundreds of pages, and really really bad reference material, thanks to "the internet" which is mainly visible to us through "the magic of search"
A major problem is that these providers have integrated themselves into the web largely, so they have influence and a presence everywhere you go, with the capability to leverage these qualities in ways that smaller technological organizations couldn't even begin to dream of.
Great!
You could also try Mullvad Leta. It is a privacy front-end for Google search and for Brave search. https://leta.mullvad.net/
SearXNG seems to be about the best if you can work with it.
I altered my homepage after looking at the article Jorah posted
Search
Duckduckgo.com
MoJeek.com
Marginalia-search.com - New
old-search.Marginalia.nu
LyricsTranslate.com
searx.space
search.aol.com
Qwant.com
leta.mullvad.net
Got rid of Startpage. Duckduckgo can yield the groogle results and mojeek and marginalia seem to work well having their own index. I'll try Mullvad Leta for Brave results.
Contrary to the listed sites (including the default version of DuckDuckGo), https://html.duckduckgo.com does not send proprietary JavaScript, according to GNU LibreJS.
I thought yahoo was part of prism and they own AOL don't they?
searx instances, startpage and duckduckgo are the best ones I know of.
Searx is especially safe as long as you don't get one that is "compromised"
For me, this was mostly about getting different results. Startpage and Duckduckgo basically are Google as far as the results are concerned and Google seems to be guiding people to read what it approves of. Mojeek and the Marginalia definitely bring up stuff google doesn't. It's about setting myself free from Google censorship.
I just use google for everything, in fact, I've been using google, for my entire lifetime, and have actually seen how it's design has changed, which is significant.
It used to be a very different program, google search, but through the years, we actually progressively lost the capability to use, for example, advanced search operators, which were essential little commands we could issue to actually search the google index thoroughly.
Then after they removed support for different advanced search operators, guess what happened next. Then they disabled the functionality of the remaining search operators.
So performing a search for example, for like: site:www.gnu.org inurl:"manuals"
would suddenly turn up completely different results. in the past you could actually use google in order to, with that search query, pull up every single page in googles index, that was for "www.gnu.org" and contained the word "manuals" in the url.
After that happened, which idk, was maybe 10 years ago, google search was essentially completely dead, and presented entirely malicious functionality instead. To use that same search query as an example, after those extreme alterations to the google search program, would result in users receiving results, that were totally irrelevant, programmatically irrelevant actually, and eventually they even turned into like A.I. powered insults, using web pages, to actually insult and intimidate people.
That's vitally important to comprehend. We may attempt to avoid proprietary software here on trisquel, as much as we can, but simultaneously, it's vitally important, to actually comprehend the changes that are taking place, in the greater world, and to understand how they effect people, and the technology that we all use.
The greater technological domain, in other words, is influenced by these specific events enormously, that I just described for you.
Google has data centers in certain countries and they have them designed so poorly that they require tons of water to cool them off. Each year they require more, rather than have an efficient way of cooling them off. My point is, even if you can ignore the surveillance part of google, they are like many data collector companies, hurting the environment with their bs waste of resources.
This is why people are thumbing you down a bunch I believe.
Google is not a good corporation. Microsoft, apple and facebook and similar are also bad.
Basically, if its a data collection corporation, don't put them in a positive light. They are just horrible on multiple levels.

Can anyone read this? I feel like I'm talking to myself. I feel like I'm completely alone here @Trisquel
Or is the globally connected internet with over eight billion people on Earth real? Alternatively, where any one of them at any time, might, say anything at all. To anybody!
>"Can anyone read this? I feel like I'm talking to myself. I feel like I'm completely alone here @Trisquel"
You're talking about using google search for everything on a forum where probably almost no one uses google for anything. So there's not much to say. I personally don't know about any of the changes to google search over the years that you are talking about in this post. I don't think I've used it in the past ~13 years since Edward Snowden exposed google for their PRISM backdoor they were running for the various spy agencies and their mass surveillance efforts.
Can you see the exact words though? I'm not sure if anyones seeing this, cause it's a really awesome post dude...
this is what people should be talking about, if the internet, is real...
I can see the words, but they don't mean much to me. Since I haven't used google search in so long, I don't know what the options are or how they have changed over time. It really means nothing to me.
if you can hear me, which of the first three matrix movies, have you watched the most times?
I await your reply...

there's only one right answer btw... if you get it wrong, I'm leaving Trisquel forever
good bye trisquel
You are one strange dude man. I cannot figure out what you are trying to say/accomplish.
Its possible you exceed Jodiendo's level of trolling
I wonder where Aku.trisquel will be teaching next.
